The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) manages thousands of assets exposed to the harshest outdoor environments, from trail markers and equipment tags to permits and field identification labels. Their existing labels faced a persistent issue: the ink would rub off or deteriorate when exposed to rain, humidity, and heavy handling.

Solution: A Unique Film Overlay

When the DNR approached Saxon Labels, our team immediately began testing materials and finishes designed to resist moisture, abrasion, and UV exposure. Through collaborative testing, we developed a custom film overlay system that protected the printed surface from both physical wear and environmental damage.

This specialized overlay acted as a durable shield, sealing in the ink and preventing it from rubbing off,  even after long-term exposure to rain, mud, and sunlight. Combined with a high-performance adhesive formulated for outdoor use, the label became virtually weatherproof.
